Introducing Good Groceries by Wonky

We started with curly carrots and surplus greens, finding that far too much food was being left behind for no good reason. Growers were struggling to get fair prices whilst consumers were being pinched at the checkout.

That was five years ago now. Since then, we've rescued over 5 million kilos of fruit and veg, built relationships with growers across Aotearoa, thanks to thousands of Kiwis who chose to shop differently.

But the more time we spent with farmers and producers, the more we saw the problem extended far beyond wonky vegetables.

We met cheesemakers with offcuts that didn't fit retail specs. Farmers raising animals ethically but competing against mystery meat with misleading labels. Producers making brilliant products that ended up wasted because of packaging flaws or short dates.

The same issues we'd been tackling in produce - waste, lack of transparency, unfair pricing - were playing out across the whole food chain.

We couldn't just ignore it.

Good Groceries by Wonky is the natural next step in our story. It's still us - same mission, same values, same obsessive love of connecting people to the food they eat. But now, it's bigger.

We're not trying to become a supermarket. We're not here to stock every possible thing you might ever need at 8pm on a Tuesday. That's not the Wonky way.
Instead, we're building something more thoughtful: a curated shopping experience that brings together rescued goods, meat and cheese from farmers we trust, Kiwi brands worth backing, and low-waste essentials - all delivered in one convenient go.

Think of your Wonky Box as the heart of it all. Your weekly (or fortnightly) fruit and veg is still the ticket to the show. But now, you can top up with everything from butcher-quality meat to artisan cheese offcuts and refillable pantry staples.

_{WONKY MAKES SOMETHING “GOOD”?}

We'll be honest - we're picky. Every single product that earns a spot in Good Groceries has to meet at least one (but usually more) of these criteria:

• Rescued from waste – Short-dated stock, packaging flaws, overproduction, offcuts, or surplus. If it's good food facing an unfair fate, we'll give it another shot.
• Supports small local producers – From small-batch cheesemakers to ethical farmers, we back the people growing and making great kai right here in Aotearoa.
• Ethically farmed or produced – Free-range, grass-fed, regeneratively farmed. We care about how animals are treated and how land is cared for.
• Minimal or zero packaging – Our Refillery range comes in compostable paper bags, not plastic.
• Responsibly sourced – Rice, lentils, certain grains—some essentials just don't grow here. When we source from overseas, we're honest about it and choose suppliers who meet our standards.

FRIDGE FILLERS
Chilled goods chosen with care. Butcher-quality, ethically produced meat from family-run New Zealand farms. Artisan cheese offcuts from brilliant NZ cheesemakers. Deli staples, olives, fresh pasta, sauces, and soups - all tasty, all with a story worth telling.

This isn't mystery meat. It's free-range, grass-fed, and ethically farmed - from producers who do things right. It's cheese that's genuinely good, just shaped a bit differently. It's food you can feel confident about.

Not everything in Fridge Fillers is rescued, unlike our usual Wonky Boxes. Our meat earns its spot because we can support more Kiwi producers and share quality, ethically farmed meats with you. When we do find surplus or offcuts (like deli meats or cheese), we'll rescue those too. But quality and provenance come first, always.

THE WONKY PANTRY
Your go-to for everyday essentials with a Wonky twist. A mix of rescued staples (short-dated, overstocked, cosmetically flawed) and responsibly sourced goods from local makers and trusted brands.

You'll find the classics - pasta, sauces, snacks, spread - plus the occasional wildcard when something brilliant crosses our desk. Some products are diverted from waste. Others support small producers or fill a genuine gap in your store cupboard. All are here for a good reason.

_REFILLABLESStock up without the pointless plastic. Pantry staples like lentils, rice, pasta, oats, and flour, delivered in compostable paper bags. Portioned sensibly, sourced transparently, and ready to go straight into your cupboard.

We're not trying to stock every obscure grain under the sun - just the essentials you actually use, minus the packaging you definitely don't need. Need more of something? Add multiple portions and we'll combine them into one bag. Simple.
