PAPER BAG METHOD
Place your unripe avocados in a paper bag, along with a ripe kiwifruit or apple. These fruits release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that helps accelerate the ripening of avocados by triggering the production of enzymes responsible for softening and sweetening the fruit.
To maximise the effectiveness of this method, ensure that the avocado and the ripe kiwifruit or apple are in close proximity within the bag. The closer they are, the more concentrated the ethylene gas will be.
Roll the top of the paper bag closed to trap the ethylene gas inside. This creates a controlled environment that encourages the avocados to ripen evenly.
Leave the bag at room temperature for approximately 1-3 days, checking on them periodically. Avocados should ripen within this time frame, but the exact duration may vary depending on factors such as the initial firmness of the avocados and the room temperature.
As you check on the avocados, gently squeeze them to assess their ripeness. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure when they are ready to eat. Once they reach your desired level of ripeness, store them in the refrigerator to slow down further ripening until you're ready to use them.
REMOVE THE STALK
Before you begin the ripening process, consider removing the stalk or stem from the top of each avocado. This simple yet effective step can help accelerate ripening.
The stalk or stem, also known as the "pip," is typically attached to the avocado, and it can inhibit the release of ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone responsible for ripening. By removing the stalk, you allow for better exposure to ethylene gas, which, in turn, aids in a more even and faster ripening process.
After removing the stalk, place the avocados in a well-ventilated area at room temperature. This method can be particularly useful when controlling the ripening process without using a paper bag.
Check the avocados periodically, gently squeezing them to assess their ripeness. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure when they are ready to eat. Once they reach your desired level of ripeness, store them in the refrigerator to slow down further ripening until you're ready to use them.
IN THE OVEN!
If you cannot wait and want to use your avocado now! Believe it or not, you can put them in the oven, accelerating the ripening process.
Preheat your oven to 100°C.
Wrap each unripe avocado in aluminium foil. Wrapping them individually ensures even ripening.
Place the foil-wrapped avocados on a baking sheet or oven-safe dish.
Put the avocados in the preheated oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes. Check them after 10 minutes to see if they've softened to your liking. The exact time may vary depending on the initial firmness of the avocados and your desired level of ripeness.
Remove the avocados from the oven and let them cool at room temperature. Once they've cooled down, they should be ready to eat.
